A Day of Women’s Empowerment, Their Rights, and Equality

On International Women's Day, we gather together to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of women all across the world. It is a day for celebrating their courage, resilience, and successes while also reflecting on the progress that still has to be made toward gender equality.  At Amma Nanna Anada Ashramam, we believe in the inherent worth of every person, regardless of gender, and understand that true spiritual and societal growth can only occur when everyone is treated with respect, love, and equality.

Why is Women’s Day Celebrated on March 8th?

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8th to honor the historical struggles and achievements of women. The date originates from the early 20th century when women in the U.S. and Europe began advocating for better working conditions, voting rights, and social justice.

The first National Women’s Day was celebrated on February 28, 1909, in the U.S., organized by the Socialist Party of America to support striking Textile workers. However, March 8th gained significance in 1917, when  women in Russia protested for "bread and peace" during World War I, which was essential in the Russian Revolution.

In 1977, the United Nations officially recognized March 8th as International Women's Day, and since then, it has become a global celebration of gender equality and women's empowerment.
